This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer

Symptom: You receive the following error message after clicking a link in Outlook: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.

Restrictions

This seems to be caused by uninstalling Firefox (such as I did, when I uninstalled Firefox 3 beta) or whatever your default browser happens to be.

Fix: Go to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs. Then on the left, choose Program Access and Defaults.  Open up whichever configuration is currently selected and change the default web browser selection to something other that what is currently chosen. Click OK, then test the link in Outlook.

This worked for me. YMMV.

A method I've used to deal with this is to open another browser (in my case, Opera), set it to be the default browser, then go back to Fireshizzle and make it the default again.

Thanks for the help. I had this problem with Outlook 2007 and Windows Vista.

Under Vista, go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Set program access and computer defaults.

You need to be logged in as an administrator.

It didn't work immediately for me. I'm not sure if it worked after the next time I logged in, or after I had rebooted the computer.

Thanks again,

Chris

Glad this post helped and thanks for listing the steps for Vista. My instructions were for XP. Guess I should have made that clear.

Thanks again!

you'd think I could remember this happening to you last week so I could fix it on my computer. anyhow, my system required a reboot in order for these changes to work, but they did.

Just to follow up:

I had to re-apply this fix when I updated to Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 3. I did need to log out and log back in after making a change with an administrator account, but I did not need to reboot.

The instructions from Chris above that relate to Outlook 2007 and Windows Vista are THE ANSWER. jUST TO ADD SOME DETAIL: Be sure to go into 'Set program access and defaults' and NOT 'Set your program defaults' (it doesn't work going through the latter). Then, once in 'Set program access and defaults,' expand the Custom tab and change from 'Use my current Web browser' to Firefox (or IE, depending on which you prefer) and click OK. Close Outlook and reopen and links in email should now open your preferred browser. THANKS CHRIS.

I solved this problem by clicking on this site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Just choose HTM/HTML Associations (Restore the default associations for htm/html files)
Very quick and useful!

Thanks your fix worked fine for me. I had exactly the same problem - tried out Firefox 3 then decided to uninstall to go back to version 2.0.0.14 .

For info I'm using Win XP spk3 v3244 with MS Outlook 2003 SP3.

Thanks again!

Wow glad I found this. Microsoft's knowledge base has complete nonsense. I believe I installed FireFox 3 beta and uninstalled it.

Thanks so very much..

Searched on the web & every other site pointed me to a Microsoft page that said a registry entry had been corrupted & to import and replace the corrupted entry. Tried that & no change.. Tried system restore to the oldest restore point available, tried system file checker, tried uninstalling any new programs installed in the last few weeks and nothing worked.

Guess the problem happened when I tried to upgrade to Firefox 3 from 2.0.0.14, program wouldn't load properly, browser page was displaying corrupted, so I decided to go back to 2.0.0.14. (another NIGHTMARE). Took me almost 6 hours to finally get Firefox working again and back to the state it was in before I tried the upgrade. (apparently FF 3 changes and adds other files to your profile & FF 2 can't remove or overwrite the new info).

So, after pulling my hair out and starting to think "rebuild", your simple solution fixed the problem without even needing a re-boot.

again, thanks!!

Browser uninstall wizards should ask you what you want to make your default browser, now that you're removing the current one.

Thank you very much for this solution. I hate to say it that I think my outlook was broken with respect to clicking hyperlinks after I installed the latest version of Foxfire.

I really am not pleased with software that takes over aspects of my pc without asking, for self serving reasons no less.

Be that as it may. THANK YOU, I have been hunting for this solution for days.

Bye.

This happened right after installing all the new MS security updates, and so I was already blaming them (which sounded a lot like "$%#^@* Microsoft!!!!!"). But I did also revert to Firefox 2 this week, and so it turns out that this was what I had to do. I restarted Outlook, and everything is okay! Thanks!
